Not that we need a holiday to celebrate our love for all things chocolate, but with National Chocolate Day fast approaching, we are craving the sweet treat a little more than usual. Whether you are looking for the perfect dessert or just looking to sweeten up your daily routine, here are a few of our favorite spots to enjoy a little confection perfection.
The Royal Chocolate

With a name like The Royal Chocolate, it’s no wonder that this is our first stop on our quest for the best cocoa creations in town. With chocolate-covered apples and strawberries, a huge assortment of truffles and even a delectable chocolate fondue for two, this local candy-land is dishing out the highest quality Belgian chocolate in all of its glorious forms. Stop in and treat yourself to a few gourmet chocolates and try a free sample (or two) while you’re there.
Kilwins
A short walk from the boardwalk, Kilwins is a sensory experience from the moment you walk in. The warm aroma of handcrafted fudge, fresh waffle cones and Heritage Chocolate fills the shop, drawing in passersby who had no intention of stopping. Locally owned and operated, the Virginia Beach location makes a wide range of confections right in the open kitchen — including hand-dipped caramel apples, truffles, nut clusters, sea salt caramels and over-the-top ice cream creations. Whether you are stopping in after a morning on the sand or treating yourself mid-boardwalk-stroll, Kilwins is the kind of stop that completes a beach day.
Pourfavor Coffee Shop

Located inland in Virginia Beach, Pourfavor Coffee Shop is serving out chocolatey coffee drinks that are almost too pretty to drink. Almost. While you can’t really go wrong with any of their concoctions, it can be hard to settle in on just one. Luckily, with their coffee flight, you don’t have to. Dive into a sampling of four of their creations like the latte, macchiato, mocha and cold brew for the perfect pairings of coffee and chocolate that will be hard to put down.
The Yard Milkshake Bar
The Yard Milkshake Bar has built a devoted following in Virginia Beach for good reason. Located on Virginia Beach Boulevard, this over-the-top dessert destination serves loaded milkshakes, layered sundaes and cookie dough jars — all made to order and served in branded mason jars you get to keep. With 29 flavors of ice cream to choose from and endless topping combinations, choosing just one thing is the hardest part. Chocolate lovers won’t be short on options, and dairy-free and vegan choices are available too for those who want in on the fun without the guilt.
Twisted Sisters Cupcakes

With made-from-scratch cupcakes like Death by Chocolate, Twisted Sisters Cupcakes is a must-try for anyone who prefers to have their chocolate cake and eat it too. While you can stop into their shop, located about halfway between Town Center and the boardwalk, you may also be lucky enough to catch Twisted Sisters’ owner, Ariel, and her team serving handmade cupcakes from their big pink truck around Virginia Beach.
Forbes Candies
A Virginia Beach institution since 1930, Forbes Candies has been perfecting its original recipes for nearly a century. With multiple locations along the Oceanfront — including 24th and 28th Street on Atlantic Avenue — you can watch taffy being pulled and chocolates being hand-dipped right in front of you. It’s as much an experience as it is a sugar run. Stock up on chocolate-dipped fudge, chocolate pecan logs, hand-crafted chocolate-covered treats and their famous salt water taffy drizzled in dark and white chocolate. A taste of old-school Virginia Beach that never gets old.
