With reports of our extra-large, exceedingly sweet berries dating back to the early 1600s, strawberries were among the first American crops to be savored by early English settlers. Today, thanks to our famously mild temperatures and rich, fertile soil, Virginia Beach produces nearly 400 acres of strawberries per year — not to mention other fresh fruits and vegetables.
Most of these crops are grown on family farms in Pungo, a delightful agricultural region just west of Sandbridge — and many can be enjoyed right off the vine. Depending on the time of year, your visit to one of Pungo’s many “you-pick” farms might yield the aforementioned strawberries, blueberries, apples, pumpkins and more. You-pick farms like Cullipher Farm, Henley Farms and Flanagan Farms offer the chance to taste farm-fresh produce at the peak of freshness and flavor, while you enjoy a day of family fun and support local farmers, too.
