Pet-Friendly Virginia Beach

If you’ve landed on this page, you’re already our people. Thanks to our generous geography and furry-friend-forward culture, Virginia Beach is one of the most dog-friendly places on the planet. Here’s a quick roundup of pet-friendly travel information and important resources for the good folks traveling with their bestest boi — or girl — in tow.

When is my Dog Allowed on the Beach?

Low-Season Rules (before Memorial Day + After Labor Day)

Dogs are welcome on our boardwalk (leashed) and beaches (on- or off-leash) anytime.

High-Season Rules (Friday before Memorial Day–Labor Day)

  • Beaches: Pets are welcome before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m on the north end of Virginia Beach (above 42nd Street), and the south end of Virginia Beach (in the Sandbridge area).
  • Boardwalk: Leashed dogs are welcome on the boardwalk from 6:00 a.m.– to 7:00 p.m.
  • Good Manners: Human companions are required to clean up after their furry friends. For the safety of all visitors, canine and human alike, please unleash your pet only on the sand, and only if they have reliable recall — and supervise your pet carefully when off leash.
