Symphonicity: Chapter III — Lament & Light

Hosted by: Sandler Center for the Performing Arts

  • March 7, 2027 - March 7, 2027

    03:00 PM - 11:59 PM

What remains after war—and where can humanity look for hope? Lament & Light is the most expansive chapter of The Long Road: Music in Search of Peace, bringing orchestra, chorus, solo voices, multimedia, and music spanning more than two centuries into a single dramatic journey.

The program opens with Vietnam War veteran and composer Kimo Williams in an affirming anthem entitled Fanfare for Life. The world premiere of Daniel W. Boothe's A World at War in Five Scenes continues the story with solo cello, acoustic guitar, voices, orchestra, chorus, and multimedia in a reflection on the experience and consequences of global conflict. Randall Standridge's intimate Fragile turns inward, confronting the battles of the mind that can linger long after physical conflict has ended. Dr. Tyler Austin joins as guest conductor in Beethoven's turbulent Coriolan Overture, plunging into a struggle of conscience and consequence. The afternoon culminates in Haydn's extraordinary Missa in tempore belli—the Mass in Time of War, also known as the Paukenmesse—in which passages of radiant faith are interrupted by ominous drums and the unmistakable shadow of conflict. Few works speak more directly to the question at the heart of this season: how do we pray for peace while war is at the door?
