Sure, Virginia Beach is known for its three unique beach experiences, but don’t let our namesake fool you – to locals and repeat visitors, living the beach life goes well beyond the sand. Just a few minutes outside of the island-like atmosphere of Sandbridge Beach, lives 8,000 acres of farmland known to Virginia Beach experts as Pungo. Our Pungo community is a dynamic part of our beach culture. A drive through Pungo means rural serenity and countryside adventure. Stop along your journey at any one of the area’s roadside stands or for a truly Pungo experience, pick your own bushel of fresh berries, produce, or even a bouquet of wildflowers. If that’s not enough to celebrate, join the locals for the annual Pungo Strawberry Festival – a two-day strawberry-centric event with over 50 strawberry delicacies, family activities, live entertainment, a parade, carnival, and much more. Just when you thought you’ve seen all of the Virginia Beach wonders, head countryside to live the Pungo life.

Stopping by Pungo’s roadside stands or exploring one of the area’s working farms makes for an adventurous outing and is a great alternative for getting away from the beach. Year-round farmers markets are also a great source for freshly picked Pungo produce as well.
Truly remarkable is New Earth Farm, a sustainable, organic and educational working farm that allows visitors to get their hands dirty while learning about local produce, sustainable farming and cooking. At the farm, visitors can learn to make cheese, kombucha, sheer sheep and more during their regularly scheduled classes or sign up for cooking classes led by some of the area’s top chefs, including chefs who have been invited to the James Beard House, at the farm’s Food Lab to learn how local ingredients come together to influence Virginia Beach’s culinary scene.
Pungo is home to some of the greatest local secrets and dining is no different. From kayaking to Blue Petes to some of the area’s best pizza, Pungo is no stranger to repeat customers. Explore Pungo Dining
