Fishing the Chesapeake Bay aboard Captain Hogg’s Virginia charter boat the “Smokin’ Gun II” is comfortable and safe. This boat is a 2008 custom-built 40′ Evans that is Coast Guard certified for charters up to 32 passengers. The boat is equipped with the latest electronics and fishing equipment. Powered by a 670 H.P. Cummins Diesel, this charter boat cruises the Chesapeake Bay at 26 knots.  We get to the fish fast so our fishing charter spends more time catching fish than cruising!

Black Drum Fishing

Black Drum are one of the largest fish in the Chesapeake Bay. Black Drum can tip the scales at well over 100 pounds. Black drum fishing is available in the lower Chesapeake Bay from May to June and the best time to come is the month of May.

Bluefish Fishing

Bluefish range in size from 1-25 pounds and can be found in the Chesapeake Bay from early April to January. Your are in for a good fight when bluefish fishing.  With their sharp teeth, bluefish make for a fun fish to catch.

Cobia Fishing

Cobia are well known for their great fight and are also great to eat. Cobia will arrive in the lower Chesapeake Bay in mid-May and will stay in the Chesapeake Bay until late September. We will be sight casting, trolling and also live and dead baiting when cobia fishing.

Flounder Fishing

Flounder fishing is popular in the Chesapeake Bay area due to the great taste of the fish and excellent fight. From early May to late October, fish ranging from 1 to 15 pounds are in season. Most of the big flounder that are caught in the Chesapeake Bay come from the structures of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Red Drum Fishing

Red drum, or channel bass, are one of the most noble fish in the Chesapeake Bay. Available from May to September, red drum put up a great fight. When red drum fishing, we will be trolling, live baiting and dead baiting.

Rockfishing

Rockfishing  is  very popular because striped bass are a great fight and delicious to eat.  Rockfishing is done in the lower Chesapeake Bay all year long, but these fish may only be kept during two seasons. The first season is May 1st to June 15th and the second is October 4th to the end of March.

Black sea bass spend most of their time close to the sea floor and often school around rocks, reefs, and wrecks.

Sheepshead Fishing

Sheepshead, also known as "The Poor Man’s Lobster", are another great eating fish. Sheepshead fishing is in season  from June until October in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Most citation size fish of the Virginia Saltwater fishing tournament are caught at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Spadefishing

Pound for pound, spadefish are the strongest fighting fish in the Chesapeake Bay - and also great to eat! Spadefishing is available from June to September at the Chesapeake Bay Light Tower, offshore wrecks and at the world famous Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Spanish Mackerel Fishing

Spanish mackerel with their silver sides and yellow spots are probably the most colorful fish of the Chesapeake Bay and are also good to eat. Spanish mackerel fishing is done trolling at various locations throughout the lower bay, with larger ones caught near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Striped Bass Fishing

Tautog Fishing

Tautog, or "taug", are great eating and a good fight! Taug can be found in the lower Chesapeake Bay from April to June and then from October to January. During March we are tautog fishing at offshore wrecks and the Chesapeake Bay Light Tower where the larger tautog are found.

Trout Fishing

Grey trout (weakfish, sea trout) are available from late April to November in the Chesapeake Bay. The largest concentrations are around the structure of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.  Trout fishing involves jigging and live baiting.   These fish range in size from 1 -12 pounds.
