Artist Ashley Berkman leads this workshop exploring the techniques of blackout and found poetry, and the experimentation of combining the found poems with imagery. Play and exploration are important parts of any creative practice, requiring courage and allowing us to tap into the unconscious mind of the creator.
Teen Studio is a free drop-in workshop, stay for 5 minutes or the whole afternoon. No need to pre-register. Materials are provided, though feel free to bring in your go to sketchbook and any collage materials, drawings, ideas, etc. This workshop welcomes LGBTQ teens and allies.
About the Artist: Ashley Berkman is a multimedia artist and performer who identifies as queer. Her works explore the themes of communication, language as a visual medium, and found poetry. She has a strong focus on creativity as a practice and process over perfection. Having worked in a wide variety of artistic disciplines, Ashley seeks to make connections between them. If given the opportunity she will eagerly deliver her dissertation on why Jurassic Park is the best movie ever made. She has lived in Africa, worked at Disneyworld, ridden her bicycle across America, and splits her time between creative practice and teaching at both Tidewater Community College and the Governor’s School for the Arts.
