Saggar Firing is a low-fire technique, using an outdoor kiln, to give your pottery surfaces exciting splashes of orange, peach and pink colors along with smoky grays. Students will arrange a combination of combustible materials, packed around bisque fired pottery. During firing, the materials within the saggar combust and can yield a range of unexpected colors and surface designs. After unloading the kiln, you’ll have the option to finish your piece with a clear coat to further enhance the surface and add gloss. Saggar fired pieces will not be watertight or functional for food use. Student must bring an 8-inch terracotta planter and tray, and one bisque fired pottery piece (or several small pieces) that will fit inside the planter which will serve as a saggar.

Please view the materials list for additional recommendations and optional materials.
