DESCRIPTION: See first hand how each of us can play our part in being kind to the environment. Hop on board The Nature Bus and be taken to peek inside a private solar powered home that is an exemplary model of green living infrastructure. The home owner (a NASA Langley engineer) will give us a tour of the green roof, rainwater cistern, solar PV, solar hot water heater, the rain garden, and the wetlands buffer out by the dock. She will talk to us about their green builder who used local and sustainable materials. Peek inside the electric cars that sit on a driveway of permeable pavers. Our tour guide has received the Women of Distinction award and the Exemplar award in Hampton Roads; she will share tips and tricks, right down to the small changes we can all make, such as minimizing our lawn, using less plastics, purchasing fair trade and locally made items, choice of light bulbs and laundry detergent, composting, and so much more. We will learn how to detect heat leaks from our home’s windows. We will take time for a picnic lunch and then we will hop back onto The Nature Bus for a private tour of Norfolk Academy’s green efforts: 700kW of solar panels, composting and recycling program, and their organic healthy snack program.  If time permits, we may make an additional stop to view another local solar effort. Return will be 3:30 “ish” Following the tour, you will receive an email with her complete list of informational and useful links; it is a comprehensive compilation!
