The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and the Office of Cultural Affairs are proud to welcome Roberto Jamora’s newest exhibition, “Home Field Advantage,” Nov. 3 through Dec. 26, 2018.
In Jamora’s words, “Home Field Advantage refers to the home field in sports, but also to color field abstract painting. The home field I have in mind is my hometown of Virginia Beach, where I am presenting my work for the first time at the Sandler Center.”
In this Sports Abstraction Series, Jamora paints marks and forms that correspond with actions and symbols found in sports; including brackets, running drills, strategic play formations, and trophies. Fascinated by systems and parallels within art and sports, Jamora considers painting with oil on canvas to be like a court or field where there are specific rules, logic and history. The studio then becomes an arena where unscripted drama can take place.
Born in Annapolis, Md., in 1987, Roberto Jamora grew up in Virginia Beach. He holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and an MFA in Visual Arts from Purchase College, State University of New York (SUNY). Jamora currently resides in Richmond, Virginia, and is an Adjunct Professor at VCU School of the Arts.
Jamora was an Emerging Artist-Teacher Fellow at Joan Mitchell Foundation and also taught at Purchase College, SUNY. Earlier this year, Jamora was awarded an Artists Community Engagement Grant from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation for his project, “An Inventory of Traces,” a series of abstract paintings inspired by the stories of immigrants in NYC. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Center of New Orleans, Topaz Arts, Page Bond Gallery, ADA Gallery, JuiceBox Art Space, Norte Maar, Shockoe Artspace, Good Enough Projects, Quality Gallery, Scott Charmin Gallery, Fouladi Projects, The Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelly Foundation, Open Space, Outlet Fine Art and Art Helix.
The exhibit will be on view in the second- and third-floor lobbies from Nov. 3 through Dec. 26 during the Sandler Center’s normal operating hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or during any performance at the Sandler Center, 201 Market St., Virginia Beach.
