There’s just something about the start of the New Year that sets us into motion and motivates us to train harder and run faster (or run, at all, in some cases), and it turns out that Virginia Beach is the perfect spot to put those resolutions to work! In fact, it’s no surprise that we’ve been consistently ranked among America’s Fittest Cities. With countless races – from 5Ks and 10Ks to half- and full marathons – our destination makes for one amazing track.
Early in the year, Shamrock Marathon Weekend (March 18-20) offers plenty of running action for beginners and Boston Marathon trainees alike, with six running events and three special challenges, all culminating with the Shamrock Marathon and Half-Marathon on March 20, which provide a scenic course set alongside the Atlantic Ocean.
Later in the year, just in time for Labor Day festivities, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series arrives at the beach. The weekend hosts (Sept. 3-4) a Health & Fitness Expo and three running events (“Mile on the Sand,” 5K and Half-Marathon), all culminating with live performances on the sand during the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series, headlined last year by Sheryl Crow (be sure to stay tuned for this year’s headliner!) during the American Music Festival, the largest outdoor music event on the East Coast.
Want to add some fun to your run? Sign up for the Anthem Wicked 10K (Oct. 29), which in addition to boasting a challenging and scenic course, also fittingly includes a costume contest and post-race party on the beach. Be sure to cap off your running schedule for the year with another festive feat. The Surf-n-Santa Five Miler (December) provides a magical trot unlike any other, as runners dash through the oceanfront under the Holiday Lights at the Beach. Be sure to stay tuned for 2016 details, coming soon.
Ready? Set. Go!
We’ll see you at the finish line.
