(Virginia Beach, Va., February 26, 2014) – The Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) was recently selected as the only destination in Virginia to receive a 2014 Readers’ Choice Award from SportsEvents Media Group, the leading industry publication focused exclusively on helping sports planners produce excellent competition in the United States and Canada.

“Our online voting system allowed us to gather thousands of nominations and votes cast by sports event planners around the country for the 2014 Reader’s Choice Awards,” said Kristen McIntosh, SportsEvents editor. “These award winners have gone above and beyond to provide the quality sports infrastructure, services and commitment to today’s discerning sports event planners demand. These winners have truly set the bar high for the sports events they host.”

“Sports marketing is a key player in helping to drive Virginia Beach’s tourism industry – which is Virginia Beach’s second-largest revenue generator – and positioning the coastal city as a year-round destination,” said Virginia Beach CVB Director James B. Ricketts. “Winning this award is further evidence of the hard work and dedication our team has to upping our game in the sports event industry.”

Each year for the past four years, the Virginia CVB’s Sports Marketing team has generated an average of 101,500 hotel room night bookings, the majority of which occur between October and May. In 2011-2012 alone, visitors arriving for a sports competition accounted for 9.4% of Virginia Beach’s visitation in the spring and 6.6% in the fall
