Enjoy a Winter Wildlife Vacation in Virginia Beach

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 by Mike Halperin

lg_Tmb_twobirds A well-kept secret is that winter is a wonderful time for wildlife and visitors to enjoy Virginia Beach.  Our seashore city is fortunate to have many special visitors that may include harbor porpoises, harbor seals, whales, and a variety of waterfowl. Visiting humpback, fin, and sometimes right whales can be elusive creatures but are not uncommon sightings.  Birds that may be seen as they frequent our waters are Northern gannets, brown pelicans, and double-crested cormorants as well as other playful sea birds.  Great fish schools of menhaden and bay anchovies attract this wildlife to Virginia Beach waters, helping us earn the title of “The Striped Bass Capital of the World.”

Enjoy a season of Whale Watching

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 by Mike Halperin

“As we approached the area, we could both see geysers of water shooting up in the air intermittently…As we slowly idled closer and closer, the whale seemed to be about thirty to thirty-five feet long.  As it rolled on its side, it beat the water with a twelve-foot long pectoral fin.  We stopped the boat a respectful distance away and silently watched the playful mammal.” *

A well-kept secret is that the winter months are a wonderful time for whales and visitors to enjoy Virginia Beach.   The whales are migrating from northern areas to tropical breeding grounds and linger here annually to feed on large schools of menhaden and bay anchovies.  These same huge schools of bait allow Virginia Beach to claim the unrivaled title of “The Striped Bass Capital of the World.”  Visiting whales include humpback and fin whales with an occasional right whale.   Adult humpbacks are generally 45′ to 52′ long weighing up to 40 tons.  Fin whales are the second longest whale species, growing to lengths of 88′ while Northern Hemisphere fin whales visiting Virginia Beach approach a norm of 70′.

Whale of a Winter

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009 by Teresa Diaz

What weighs 40 tons, eats over one ton of food a day but is not afraid to be seen at the beach? Fin and humpback whales! And they are making an appearance in Virginia Beach this winter. From December 27th through March 13th, 2010, you can be witness to humpback or fin whales as they frolic along the our shoreline.

Winter Whale Watching in Virginia Beach

Thanks to the food-rich mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and warm Atlantic Ocean waters, surprisingly acrobatic humpback and fin whales can be seen diving, breaching, spyhopping and lobtailing off our coast each winter. These massive creatures can weigh up to 70 tons, range up to 79 feet long and consume an impressive 1 ½ tons of food each day.  With speeds up to 23 mph, humpback and fin whales display amazing behaviors when in search of food and when communicating with other whales.
