Embracing the Past

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 by Sherry Friel

“Sometimes we have to walk from the past and sometimes we have to embrace it. Heaven help us know the difference.” ~Adaleen Henrickson, character in the HBO Series Big Love.

3 treesAwhile back my Dad and I visited my childhood home with my son, Nathaniel. Having grown up locally, this only entailed a short 30-minute trip and lots of courage. Why courage? I’m not really sure. I guess I’ve never been one to look back so much, and the idea of seeing the home where awkward childhood and pre-teen years unfolded held about as much appeal as middle school gym class (and I hated gym class!).

But with my son approaching 8 years old, I naturally found myself reminiscing more and more about the places and activities I enjoyed when I was his age. I also kept wondering if my favorite climbing trees were still standing, so I called Dad to see if he’d like to photograph them with us. Of course he wanted to! My parents planted three small pine trees well before their children were born, and to them they would always symbolize the three lives they brought into the world. By the time we were in elementary school, those trees were as tall as the house and perfect for climbing and hiding out.

To my surprise and delight, what were once small pine trees now tower enormously over the tiny house my parents lived in as a young couple. It was pure joy to take my son back to my humble childhood home. He took to the trees in that yard as we had as children: climbing, playing, and fearlessly stretching further to see how high he could go before I’d stop him. The house is currently vacant, which gave us a rare opportunity to explore the yard, peek in the windows, and warmly embrace the lights of the past. We also got a treasure trove of photographs.

My son, Nathaniel, enjoyed the trees just as much as I did as a kid

Christmas Town Is Worthy of Starting a Family Tradition

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 by admin
Enjoy this wonderful post as guest blogger Tanisha Brown takes you on a journey through Christmas Town at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.  Tanisha is a member of the Tourism Team at the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Christmas Town: A Busch Gardens Celebration can be simply described with one word…AMAZING! There is plenty to do and see as the sunlight sets; however, when darkness hits, Busch Gardens transforms into a magical place.

My journey in Christmas Town all began in Germany at Das Festhaus with the grand feast “Taste of Christmas Town” – a mouthwatering buffet of foods such as tender turkey, juicy ham, sweet potato casserole and much more! With the delight of my meal, I also enjoyed live entertainment. “Deck the Halls” is a show performed by festively dressed singers, dancers, and a live band. Snippets of Christmas favorites were sung accompanied by exciting, upbeat choreography.  I couldn’t help snapping my fingers, tapping my feet and even singing along! A standing ovation was much deserved and appropriate for both the meal and performance. Outside of Das Festhaus stood a 50-foot Tannenbaum - the largest, decorated Christmas tree in the park. It was definitely a great photo-op and my group and I couldn’t resist!

The Beach Report – November 18, 2011

This week, Walking Tour Guide Blogger Katherine Jackson takes us down the boardwalk as she experiences one of the most festive light displays on the East Coast!

A Walk through Holiday Lights on the Boardwalk

A fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities kicked off the annual McDonalds Holiday Lights at the Beach on an incredible 70 degree evening – in November! Ah, the joys of living in a place where the weather can be so surprising. I’ve driven through the Boardwalk light show in the past, but it was even better on foot.

J’aurais voulu être pêcheur!

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 by Pat

Faith Flower Farm of Peaceful Pungo

I often reflect on the people among us with a rare, intense calling to serve others. Their minds and hearts constantly seek ways to lift, heal, and nurture the people around them. I have been fortunate to cross paths with many of these inspirational individuals throughout my life, whether at church, the baseball field, or even on Facebook!

One of these people is Audrey Hodges of Faith Flower Farm.  Late one Friday night, while scrolling the Facebook newsfeed, I noticed my friend Laura had “liked” Faith Flower Farm, a new Virginia Beach business. I was intrigued by the name, and this aspect of the farm’s stated mission: We assist people with special needs in gardening and horticultural and floral therapy programs designed to soothe the spirit and restore hope.
