We are lucky in one way when running at the beach; there is always a breeze! Some may say that is not an advantage in winter, but during the summer, let it blow!!! One of my favorite places to run in the summer is at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The boardwalk is the best for those long summer runs because you have water stops every block and some even have showers for those who want to completely dowse themselves.
The Virginia Beach Boardwalk starts at 2nd Street off Atlantic Avenue and runs all the way to 39th Street. The boardwalk in one direction is three miles and is marked every ½ mile up on a light post. There are some great summer scenes while you run: you can spot dolphins, surfers and naval ships out on the water and rollerbladers, cyclists, and walkers/runners out on the boardwalk. There is a bike path made just for cyclists that runs along the boardwalk.
For a brief history lesson when the boardwalk was first designed in 1888, it was eight feet wide, extended only four blocks and was made out of wood planks. Through time, the boardwalk was extended and now houses over 30 hotels and restaurants along the lively Oceanfront. It is now 28 feet wide.
If you are lucky and early you can spot the most magnificent sunrise you will ever see out over the water while you run. What a tranquil way to begin a morning. Live, Love, Run in Virginia Beach!!
