Virginia Beach is an ideal year-round destination, but the end of August is bittersweet. On one hand, the official end of summer is near (no fear - there’s plenty of sunshine and more great weather waiting for us over the next several months!!). On the other hand, it’s exciting that we’re at the onset of a premium event in Virginia Beach: the East Coast Surfing Championship or as we like to call it, the ECSC.
Today starts the beginning of the 28th Annual ECSC and we couldn’t ask for better surf conditions. While no threat to us, several weather patterns in the tropics have made for AWESOME surf conditions in Virginia Beach. The competition for titles is always fierce during this surfing event, but the challenge of choppier water and bigger waves will make for a really good show.

Don’t miss it………visit the ESCS site for a full schedule of this weekend’s events.
See you on the Beach!

At th e height of flounder season, an interview with local charter captain, Level V Master Angler, and flounder expert Craig Paige helps put this season’s fishing in perspective.
- Q: Craig, what changes have you witnessed in the Virginia Beach fishery over the years and how do you assess the condition of the Chesapeake Bay and its affect on fishing?
- A: Many new species such as sheepshead and blueline tilefish are now eligible for Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament citations. Lots of release categories have also been added. The bay water quality seems good with large schools of menhaden and a substantial crab population. However, the striped bass population may to be on a down cycle.

The water's never been better-come on down!
It’s mid-August in Virginia Beach and the “Dog Days of Summer” are definitely upon us. There are very few ways to beat this kind of heat so we’re pretty lucky to be able to take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay whenever we choose to – that is, when we don’t have to work!! But as the saying goes: If you’re lucky enough to be in Virginia Beach, you’re lucky enough!!!
Speaking of lucky, in a special to today’s Virginian-Pilot, a great shot by photographer Terril Jones is featured on Page B3. Jones captured some veteran surfers at the south end in the company of some pretty cool characters. Check it out for yourself: http://bit.ly/cMyJQC . Talk about Living the Life!
Interested in taking surfing lessons? There are plenty of options; if you start now, you’ll be “hanging ten” in no time!

I never realized how much of a city girl I am until my daughter, Jennifer, and I attended a one-day camp with Horse Whisperer Sali Gear and her crew at Calypso Run Farm off London Bridge Road. It was a huge eye opener. We both learned so much about horses and we genuinely had a great time.
 George was a character!
From the minute we arrived for the 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Barn Day” adventure, I was in awe of the horses and how each one has their own distinct personality. One horse named George — appropriately nicknamed Harry Houdini — had us all laughing when he used his nose to open the barn door to join us!George makes his entrance!
