If you really want to get up close and personal with sea life and exotic animals, look no further than the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center on General Booth Blvd., not far from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The center’s recent multi-million dollar renovation is attracting hundreds of visitors each week. The newest exhibit, Restless Planet, is wildly successful, offering up-close experiences and many “hands on” exhibits with hundreds of new species of fish and animals.

I met a friend for a lunch this week not far from my office and decided to take a quick look at how things are going at the Oceanfront. As I scanned up and down the boardwalk, a sea of beach umbrellas was evidence that the heat is definitely on in Virginia Beach. With temperatures averaging the high 90’s for more than a week now, the resort area beaches have been hopping with visitors and locals seeking sweet refuge in the gorgeous, refreshing Atlantic Ocean.

Taking a super early stroll along the boardwalk this week, I was amazed at how many people take advantage of the quiet morning beauty of the beach. Bikers, joggers, dog-walkers, and skaters can be found taking in the morning glory just as the sun is peeking over the horizon. The lull of the ocean waves, the invigorating smell of the salty air and the overall peace and quiet makes for a great way to start the day.

Recently I spoke with local charter fishing captain Mike Standing:
Q: Mike, what do you enjoy most as a charter boat captain?
A: Every day is a different challenge. I really enjoy seeing a person enjoy the thrills of catching a big fish for the first time; particularly if it is a child.
Q: What is a typical Virginia Beach summer day catch?
A: Virginia Beach has great year-round variety. An inshore summer catch can include spadefish, Spanish mackerel, red drum, flounder, bluefish, striped bass, sharks and much more. Offshore produces dolphin, marlin, tuna, grouper and other possibilities.
Q: How do you find the fish and what is your favorite bait?
A: By fishing most days, I stay current on where the fish are. Inshore we fish a lot of live bait and offshore we use ballyhoo, a small needlefish rigged with a hook to imitate a swimming bait fish.
Q: Why should someone visiting Virginia Beach fish on a charter boat?
A: There is always something exciting to catch! You just never know what you will hook!
Q: What else would you share about Virginia Beach sport fishing?
A: I really enjoy educating people about the ocean, especially youngsters when I get to see their faces in their first battle with a large fish.

Angler scoring a giant dolphin fish, courtesy of NOAA
As Virginia Beach waters continue to warm, some species cannot attack baits fast enough.
The ocean temperature is now 77 degrees while Chesapeake Bay has reached 80 degrees. Tuna, marlin, dolphin, tilefish, grouper and blackbelly rosefish are jumping on baits and lures! Adjacent to mid-depth structures, spadefish, sheepshead, and triggerfish are winding up in coolers while shore and bay anglers can expect to catch croaker, spot, cobia, sea mullet, flounder, bluefish, puppy drum, trout, Spanish mackerel and the occasional shark.
