The summer has finally arrived and, as a Virginia Beach local, I’m ecstatic the weather is beginning to shape up nicely! There is sooo much beach to enjoy….… 35 miles of waterfront property and 3 great beaches to choose from– the Chesapeake Bay, the Resort area and Sandbridge. This means there are plenty of spots to soak up the rays, build a killer sandcastle or just relax in the sand. With highs in the low 90’s this week, jumping in the refreshing Atlantic Ocean is a soothing way to beat the heat.
Not only are there gorgeous beaches, Virginia Beach has scores of events and activities to take in especially during the summer months. Singers, magicians, jugglers and other street performers line Atlantic Avenue every evening. It’s hard to walk by and not stop to catch a performance or two!
Live, free concerts go on all summer long at six different stages up and down the Oceanfront. Three unique beach playgrounds stand ready for the younger set, including the brand new Grommet Island Park on Second Street, one of the first playgrounds of its kind in the country.

The gang’s all here! It’s that time of year again in Virginia Beach. Most summer fish species are now actively feeding in bay and coastal waters to the delight of area anglers. The problem anglers have is deciding which species to target!

What a great weekend to be a soccer mom in Virginia Beach! My daughter’s NYSL (Neighborhood Youth Soccer League) team was one of 950 teams participating in this year’s North American Sand Soccer Tournament last week at the Oceanfront.
We’re talking 10,000 players and 100,000 spectators, with teams of all levels in town from all over the country. The Oceanfront was definitely the place to be!!

Living the beach life has more perks than I have fingers, but at the top of my list of favorite things to do while relaxing at the beach and wiggling my toes in the sand is watching the bottlenose dolphins frolick in the waves. Just this past week on Thirty-sixth Street, I saw five or six pods playing together – jumping higher than I’d ever seen! It made me long to swim out and join them but I knew I wouldn’t be able to get close enough. It was about that time that I remembered the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center runs a dolphin watching boat excursion and decided to check it out.

 Black Drum Courtesy of NOAA
The drum beat goes on! Black drum have been putting welcome bends in the rods of fishermen leaving from Virginia Beach inlets. The annual strong drum bite has begun in the inner middle bay area around buoys 13 and 16. Shoal water areas around the northern part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel have been producing black drum as large as a 53″ release. The bait of choice for black drum is clams, but if targeting red drum or channel bass, mix clams with crab. Red drum are actively feeding in the surf around Fisherman’s Island & are also on the shoals just north of the CBBT. Red drum up to 55″ have been turned in for Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament release citations. For a real thrill, try sight casting if you find a school of drum feeding in the surf zone.

I’ve been to my share of concerts to date, everything from the Rolling Stones rocking the Hampton Coliseum to Los Lobos jamming at the Norva to Tina Turner strutting the stage at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater but by far, the best times I’ve ever had were at shows on the beach at the Oceanfront. There is just something about live music, the sound of the ocean and sand between your toes that makes for an amazing experience.
Saturday night was no exception. The day was a smoldering 90+ degrees even after sunset but the crowds came out in droves to see pop icons Hall & Oates. Headliners of the weekend’s Patriotic Festival, this popular duo is always a crowd pleaser and Saturday night they were spot on.
As they belted out a list of some of the same songs I probably danced to at my high school prom (now THAT was a reality check!), I looked around and realized that summers in Virginia Beach are truly one of my all-time favorite things in life. Living in a place where others dream of vacationing leaves me feeling a little bit spoiled but moreover, pretty darn lucky. And the summer’s just beginning……
