The first sand soccer event in Virginia Beach occurred in May 1994 when 26 youth and adult teams braved a blustery nor’easter to do battle on six fields in the “Beach Soccer Kickout”. The event, co-sponsored by Beach FC and the Virginia Beach Rotary Club, proved very successful and the good news about sand soccer in Virginia Beach began quickly spreading throughout the soccer community.
As Pro Beach Soccer expanded around the world, so did the North American Sand Soccer Championships, with over 750 teams competing on 50 fields in 2006. Included in the mix were nearly twenty states and a full range of festival amusements. A direct player/coach/fan population of 25,000 was associated with NASSC 2006.

The City of Virginia Beach has been known nationally as a leader in the sports marketing industry for hosting sporting events. Our attention to detail, facilities, and partners are second to none! Not only are we known for producing sporting event but, since building the Virginia Beach Convention Center in 2007, we’ve received more and more opportunity to host national sporting conventions and sport specific annual conventions.
One of our most successful and well received Annual Meetings to date was the USA Track and Field Annual Meeting. Working with the USA Track and Field Staff was very exciting as the synergy and energy from both parties created an event experience for their members that were memorable and worthwhile. The City’s amenities, hotels, attractions and facility were all highlights for the members of USA Track and Field.
The event was held at the new Virginia Beach Convention Center with its 31,000 square foot ballroom, 150,000 square feet of exhibition space and 29,000 square feet of meeting space. The Convention Center, the staff of the Convention Center and Sports Marketing produced an event that we were all very proud of. The Virginia Beach Convention Center always shows its flexibility when hosting sporting events and this event was no exception.
The building’s partner, Center Plate, created a dining experience that rivals markets both similar in size and larger. Center Plate’s professional Chefs, managers, and servers provided an experience that left all who attended well fed and energized for the next day’s meetings. The technical staff ensured that the quality of the program(s) went well and there were no issues with the audio visual portion of the event(s).
Virginia Beach Sports Marketing considers hosting the USA Track and Field a great moment in our history. The event provided an avenue for our City to demonstrate the capabilities of the Convention Center and the staff of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau.
