Virginia Ballet Theatre

Virginia Ballet Theatre is building on a tradition begun over 40 years ago when Gene Hammett founded the Norfolk Civic Ballet to promote regional ballet, to train young dancers and to provide a center for creativity in the arts. By 1987 when former student Glenn White returned to become Artistic Director, Hammett's studio had become the Tidewater Ballet Association and prospered. White, who had been a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet and founder of the Arpeggio Ballet in Los Angeles, convinced Frank and Janina Bove to move from California to Norfolk to build the company. In 1991 they renamed the company Virginia Ballet Theatre, expanded its school and performance schedule and brought a new spirit of professionalism, excellence and community involvement.
