Grommet Island Beach Park & Playground

JT's Grommet Island Park was created due to a desire of Virginia Beach native Josh Thompson and his family to go to the beach.  Josh had to stay behind because of the difficulty of getting his wheelchair to the beach, across the sand and down to the surf. Josh, an avid surfer, was diagnosed in 2006 with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Thompson family wondered how many others never get their day at the beach for the same reason.  Thus, the park idea was born.

JT's Grommet Island Park for EveryBODY is an oceanfront destination, an accessible beach playground and park for children and adults with disabilities. It is a place where everyone can have a great day at the beach. It features 15,000 sq feet of ramps and decking a shaded play area, bench seating and areas to picnic. Soft play sculptures, accessible play equipment and cushioned play surfaces provide recreational opportunities and special beach wheelchairs are available for those who want to cruise on the sand.
