Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum/de Witt Cottage

Step back in time at the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum, housed inside the de Witt Cottage—the oldest remaining private structure on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Originally purchased in 1895, the cottage served as a private residence for most of its 130-year history before opening to the public in 1995 as the museum we know today, dedicated to the heritage of wildfowl and wildfowl hunting.

Inside the museum, visitors can view examples of the evolution of animal decoy carving art, from primitive tools to the more elaborate and expressive contemporary carvings and artwork of today. There’s also memorabilia from old hunt clubs, two interactive computer exhibits, a variety of original oil and watercolor paintings, and of course, its award-winning contemporary carvings by nationally known artists. The museum also features volunteer carvers each day, so you can see how these works of art are created.

On September 20, 2025, the de Witt Cottage is celebrating its 130th anniversary, while the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is celebrating its 30th. The highlight of the festivities is the auction, with both live and online bidding. Two wildfowl decoys are available, both crafted by local carving legends Mark and Ian McNair. Proceeds from the auction will support the museum for years to come.
