Director Brad

A nationwide search led City Manager Dave Hansen to select Brad Van Dommelen to lead the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau as its new director. He will begin work April 7, 2016.

Van Dommelen has spent much of his career in Michigan. He has been president of the Traverse City (MI) Convention & Visitors Bureau (Traverse City Tourism) since 2005 and before that, was senior vice president of strategic business development at the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. Under his leadership, the Traverse City Tourism organization received the "Best CVB in Michigan" award by the readers of Michigan Meetings & Events magazine an unprecedented six out of the last seven years.

"Brad impressed me and the interview panel, which included members of our tourism industry and city staff, with his strategic thinking and creative problem solving capabilities," said Dave Hansen. "He brings the experience and ideas we were looking for to take our CVB into the next decade, promoting Virginia Beach as a year-round leisure, business, meetings and conventions, international and amateur sports destination."

He has worked in the hospitality industry throughout his career and has considerable expertise in management, sales, research and analysis to drive growth and development in the convention and tourism industries.

"If you look around the country at the CVB's who are doing great things, Virginia Beach is a leader, and I want to be a part of that effort," said Van Dommelen. "I've been so fortunate to work in and help shape some very dynamic organizations and I'm looking forward to working to expand Virginia Beach's footprint for convention and tourism business."

Brad earned a BS in Business Management from Davenport University. He will take over from retiring executive Jim Ricketts. His salary will be $163,843. The Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau operates the 525,000 sq. ft. Virginia Beach Convention Center, as well as three year-round Visitor Information Centers and the kiosks in the resort area. It has 107 employees and a budget of $20,403,538 (operating and the Tourism Advertising Program (TAP) Fund).
